He was a veteran of the United States Army, stationed in Germany during his service.
Ron joined the Illinois State Police, graduating with Academy Class #16 January 9, 1956. He was assigned as a trooper to District 5, Joliet. He retired at the rank of Master Sergeant February 1, 1980.
He started a second career working as a bailiff for the Will County Courthouse.
Ron was also the recipient of the 'Police Officer of the Year' award presented by the Lockport Exchange Club.
He was a member of the Lockport V.F.W. Post #5788, the Lockport American Legion John Olson Post #18 and the Lockport Moose Lodge #1557.
Ron was also an avid racing fan.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joyce (nee Arado) Elder; sons, Jeffrey (Jan) Elder, Ken (Wendy) Elder and Donny (Sheila) Elder; one grandson, Shaun; a brother, Richard (Stella) Elder; his sister, Shirley (Gene) Tinnea. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Doris (nee Stanford) Elder; his brother, Ted (Joanne) Elder.

Mr. Ronald Elder, son of Mr. Ted Elder, is in Springfield attending the state police training academy. After graduating he will be assigned to a district for highway patrol duty.
