Mary Tom (Tommye) Baxter Cashin, age 88, passed away in her residence Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Tommye was born in Armuchee, Georgia to the late Nathaniel Matthew (Neff) and Georgia May Kelley Baxter and graduated Armuchee High School in 1952. She married George Edward Cashin of Augusta in November, 1963 in Atlanta. They raised their family in Decatur, Stone Mountain, and moved to St. Simons Island in 1977. They were members of St. Williams Catholic Church and later she also attended Holy Nativity Episcopal Church. In November 2020 she moved to Athens to be near her family and briefly attended St. Stephen's Anglican Church. Tommye worked as office "everything" in her husband's CPA firm for many years. She was very active with the Girl Scouts, as she was employed by them early in life and remained involved locally as a volunteer over 30 years. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed setting up book signing events and attending book festivals with local and national authors. Tommye was an excellent cook and was well known for her biscuits, cornbread and pound cakes. She was also a talented seamstress making her own wedding dress and the wedding dresses of her daughters, as well as countless dresses, quilts, and blankets for her granddaughters. She loved theater and made many of the costumes for the Island Players Theater on St. Simons. She worked tirelessly to help save the beaches at St. Simons and coastal Georgia and served on the Glynn County Tax Assessors Board. She also helped run several political campaigns over the years. But, her most favorite thing to do, was spending time with the joys of her life, her family and granddaughters, and be their Grandma Tommye.

In addition to her parents, Tommye was preceded in death by her husband, George, her three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her daughters, Norma Mashburn and her husband, Glenn of Athens and Angela Hutchinson and her husband, Michael of Cumming; four grandchildren, Mary Glenn Mashburn of New York, NY; Caroline Cashin Mashburn of Atlanta; Jordan Elizabeth Hutchinson of Cumming; and Georgia Gabrielle Hutchinson of Valdosta; many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home in Calhoun, GA and and at a later date on St. Simons Island.
