John A. Bain, 64, passed away at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Cheyenne, Dec. 20, 2007.

John was born Sept. 19, 1943, in Arkansas City, Kan. He moved to Casper at the age of five with his parents and two brothers.

He attended Natrona High School and dropped out at the age of 17. He voluntarily joined the U.S. Army. On completion of basic and airborne training, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and then reassigned to the First Infantry Division, Vietnam as a squad leader and "Tunnel Rat." John earned his U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret in 1970. His Special Forces assignments were in the 1st and 10th Special Forces Groups as a non-commissioned officer. His Special Forces occupation specialty was communications with a top security clearance. He earned his GED and an associate degree in history. His Special Forces language training was in Russian.

In 1984, John retired from the Army with an honorable discharge. He returned to his beloved Wyoming and worked for 17 years as a Veterans Outreach Counselor for the State Department of Employment Job Service Facilities in Gillette, Casper and Cheyenne.

John was married to Sharron Wurtsmith in 2001. They made their home in Burns where they lived until the time of his death.

John was an active member of the Special Forces Motorcycle Club, Brothers Vietnam, and the Harley Owners Group. He co-founded the Cowboy Chapter of the Special Forces Association and was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Special Forces Association. He received the following military decorations and awards: the Special Forces TAB, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachute Wings, Special Forces Free-Fall (HALO) Wings, Good Conduct Medals and Campaign ribbons, and the Special Forces Association Badge of Courage.

John is survived by his wife, Sharron of Burns; a daughter, Shannon Nicholes of Bartlesville, Okla.; a son, Jason Bain of Cheyenne; a stepdaughter, Mandy Wurtsmith; a stepson, Bill Wurtsmith; two grandsons, Crew and Rhett Nichols; a granddaughter, Samara Riosa; and two brothers, Bill and Les Bain, both of Casper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Bain.

Interment will be in Burns Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.
