He married Theresa Eliza Mc Leran 29 Mar 1891 at Adair in Audubon Co, IA.
He was a farmer most of his life but learned the craft of broom making about the age of 19 and continued making booms until the year he died. His grandson Dale Swinehart recalled Joel making brooms in the basement of his large farmhouse near Adair and was fascinated watching the process. His brooms lasted for many years and were preferred by his customers and neighbors.
