George Gentry Murphy was the son of Lonnie Lee Murphy and his wife, Mittie V. Styron. He was born in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). He was known to family and friends as Gentry. He was married to Mildred Pallett on September 1, 1941.

Gentry and Mildred had one son, George Gentry Murphy, Jr., who was born in April 1944. Gentry was killed in France during World War II, never having seen his new son.
