Funeral services for Phillip Lawson Payne, 81, of Cumby will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Lone Oak Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in Hall Cemetery in Lone Oak with his nephews Wayne Gideon, Otis Payne, Greg Payne, John Howard Payne, Herbie Smith and Lewis Dan Smith serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Bartley Funeral Home in Lone Oak.

Mr. Payne died Thursday, Dec. 20, at Carriage House Manor.

He was born in Hunt County on July 4, 1926, the son of Jim and Mildred Lawson Payne. They preceded him in death.

He married Virginia Nell Payne. She preceded him in death. He married Katherine Smith. She survives.

Mr. Payne retired from the Sabine River Authority. He was a World War II veteran. He served in various civic and community organizations. He was an active layman in the Lone Oak Methodist Church.

Other survivors include two daughters, Latricia Stillwell and Jackie Tarrant of Campbell; one son, Mike Payne; three step-children, Paula Ferrell, Steven Smith and Ronny Smith, all of Hopkins County; three sisters, Leona Holliman of Quinlan, Ramona Smith of Mineola and Francis VanBuskirk of Arizona; one brother, Guy Payne of Lone Oak; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Randy Jim Payne; two grandsons, Kevin Hooten and Jonathan Payne; and brothers James, Howard and Shirley Payne.
