Michel F. Amestoy, 73, Descendant of Pioneer Encino Family, Passes
Michel Francois Amestoy, 73, descendant of a pioneer Encino family, died yesterday at his home at 3330 Club Drive, West Los Angeles. Mr. Amestoy's father, Domingo Amestoy, came to Southern California from France during the 1850s and bought 5000 acres of ranch land from the Avila family, owners of the original Spanish land grant. The Amestoy ranch extended from what's now Encino to Sherman Oaks, and included that stretch of Ventura Blvd. running between the two communities. Mr. Amestoy devoted his life to operating his father's estate, valued at almost $7,000,000, and was president of the estate until until it was dissolved during the 1920s. The Amestoy family still owns considerable property in the Encino area. The Amestoy Building, at Main and Market Sts., was built by Domingo Amestoy and is standing today. Mr. Amestoy was born at another another of the family's ranches, what is now Gardena. He was educated at St. Vincent's College, College, now Loyola University and was a charter member of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. He leaves three sons, William J. of Rutland, Vt. and John and Michel F. Jr., both of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Amestoy Stangler, and brother and sister, Joseph Amestoy and Mrs. Charles Wills, all of Los Angeles. Rosary will be recited at p.m. tomorrow and Mass will celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday St. Timothy's Catholic Church at 10443 W Pico Blvd. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
