Only child of DE COURCY IRELAND, a Major in the 36th Sikh Regiment (British Army) and his wife GABRIELLE (nee BYRON). His father died in China when JOHN was four years old.

His mother then remarried in 1917 in London to MAJOR GEOFFREY LEIGH BLAIR. He was also a Major in the 36th Sikhs. His step father committed suicide just two years later after suffering with what is known today as Combat PTSD/Shell Shock.

JOHN was educated at Trinity College Dublin and Marlborough College, Oxford. He was awarded a PhD in 1951 for his Thesis entitled "The Influence of the Sea on Civilisation".

He married BEATRICE (BETTY) HAIGH in 1933. They had two daughters and one son.

He spent many years teaching across Ireland and retired at the age of 75 years in 1986. Both he and his wife were political activists for the socialist movement and had a lifelong passion for the maritime and seafaring industries, becoming a renowned maritime historian and writing several books on the history of the subject.

He became a council member of the Maritime Institute of Ireland (National Maritime Museum of Ireland), and remained for 55 years, becoming their Honorary research officer.

JOHN & BETTY were at the forefront of the protests against nuclear arms, campaigning with CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) in the late 1950's and founded the Irish Branch in 1959.
