Pekin Boy Struck, Killed Near Home

Driver Sees, Can’t Avoid 7-Year-Old

Pekin – Michael Dean Bailey, seven-year-old son, of Mr. & Mrs. James Bailey of rural Pekin Sunday morning (April 11, 1965) was struck by a car and killed on the Manito Blacktop in front of his home.

Tazewell County sheriff’s police said the boy had been playing with his dog in front of his home when he apparently darted across the road into the path of a car driven by Marvin H. Johannes, 64, of rural Pekin.

He was dead on arrival at Pekin Memorial Hospital at 12:30 p.m.

Johannes said he tried to avoid the accident by pulling to the side of the road. He was westbound at the time of the crash, enroute to Havana with his wife.

Tazewell County coroner Louis Imig will conduct an inquest at a date not yet determined.

Michael’s funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Kueck’s Funeral Home. Burial will be in the city cemetery at Kilbourne.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
