Jane was born 1833 in Push-through, a small fishing village on the southeastern coast of Newfoundland near Hermitage Bay. Her parents were John Hann and Hannah Embrey of Push-through.

Her father died in 1837, just before or after the birth of her younger brother Charles. Her mother remarried in 1838 to a James Payne. Their first child, John Payne, was born 1839 in Push-through. Sometime after their marriage, the family removed to Ramea Island, off the coast of Burgeo. Jane's mother died sometimes between 1848-1852.

Jane married William Bobbitt in 1852 in Burgeo, just a few weeks after her stepfather remarried. She was 19 years to his 35. She and her husband lived in Burgeo, where he earned his living as a fisherman, and together they had eight known children.

In 1872, they moved to Harrington Harbour in Quebec. Harrington Harbour was just being settled at the time and had only four other families, however Williams brother Thomas was close by as was his oldest son John.

William died three years later, leaving Jane a widow with children ranging from 17 to age 2. She remained a widow until her death in 1918. According to death records, she was 84 at the time of her death, and was to be buried in Harrington Harbour, possibly with her husband, as no marker can be found.
