Anthropologist. Frederick O. Gearing was an American anthropologist who earned his degrees at the University of Chicago. He did extensive fieldwork, much of it with the Fox and Cherokee Indians and is widely considered a leading expert on Native American culture and history. Among his many publications are Face of the Fox and Priests and Warriors. He often focused his research on the estrangement of tribal groups. Gearing served as chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Buffalo.
