Caruthers Youth Dies In Action

Mrs. Susie Pelley, Route 7, Caruthers, has been notified her son, Private Horace L. Pelley, was killed in action April 5th, on Cebu Island. In the Philliphines just two years to a day from the time he entered the service. Pelley was described as a "real soldier and a true friend" in a letter received by his mother from Lieutenant Vernelle J. Ness, commander of the platoon in which the Caruthers youth served. "I want to extend my deepest sympathy," Ness wrote. "I wish I could tell you personally how I feel. During a violent enemy attack, Horace held his position, throwing hand grenades and assisting the automatic riflemen until a Japanese grenade landed in his foxhole, killing him instantly. He was buried in the army cemetery near Talisay, Cebu." Pelley attended the Caruthers High School and received his army training at Fort Ord. Besides his mother, he is survived by two brothers, William Pelley, an honorably discharged soldier, and Clarence Pelley, and one sister, Mrs. Oscar Ragan, of Dos Palos.
