Edith "Edie"Atlee Wilson, 93, of Flagstaff died peacefully in her sleep on May 21, 2005. She was born January 9, 1912 in Philadelphia to Ellen and Arthur Haines. Edie grew up in Germantown, a suburb of Philadelphia, and came west to New Mexico at age 20 in 1932 and met Bates Eno Wilson at the Double S dude ranch near Silver City. They were married one year later in Santa Fe. Bates began a career with the National Park Service in 1940 which took them to Organ Pipe Cactus, El Morro, Arches, and Canyon-lands National Parks in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Edie also lived in California and Oregon in the middle years of her life and Tucson and Flagstaff in the last years.

Edie was a creative homemaker and excelled at turning drab government quarters into cozy homes. She was also a gracious hostess and was well known for the large pots of soup and chili she prepared many times for tourists stranded on the wrong side of a flooded Courthouse Wash in Arches. She was an avid reader and enjoyed several short stints as a newspaper editor. She was also a writer of short stories, poetry, and letters. She loved taking road trips and seeing new places.

She was preceded in death by Bates, her husband of 35 years; her parents; her brother Art Haines and sister Betty Remmey; nephew Haines Remmey and his son Arthur and grandson Roger Burton. She is survived by her son Alan Dixon Wilson, daughters Julia Atlee Schwalenstocker and Caroline Coalter Wilson; grandchildren Shira Wilson and David Wilson; nieces Ellen Meyers and Nina White; nephew Richie Remmey; and cousins Jane Pilling Steber and Nancy Hanson.

A memorial service will be held on June 26 at 9 a.m. at the rock house at Arches National Park headquarters. Edie's final wish was for world peace.
