Wendell Allen Smith, 64, Osawatomie, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at his home.

The son of Roy Lee and Mary Lucinda Tout Smith, he was born March 4, 1941, at Parker. He attended Parker schools, graduating in 1961 from Parker Rural High School.

He and Sandra Jean George were married Jan. 17, 1965, in Columbus, Kan. They made their home in Osawatomie until moving to Topeka in 1966. They returned to Osawatomie in 1985. They were the parents of three children.

Mr. Smith worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital for a short time after graduating from high school. He attended Vocational Technical School in Topeka for four years in the late 1960s.

He was a carpenter in the commercial construction industry and a member of the Topeka Local Carpenters Union.

His pastimes were gardening, hunting and fishing. Being very interested in nature, he loved the outdoors. He always enjoyed the first two weeks of prairie chicken hunting near Hamilton, Kan.

Those preceding him in death were his parents; two infant siblings; three brothers, Richard Smith, Robert Smith and Wiley Smith; and two sisters, Bettye Spector and Wanda Smith Orr Clark.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Smith of the home; two daughters, Sonia Jane Smith of Shawnee and Shera Jean Herman of Kansas City, Kan.; a son, Wesley Smith of Edgerton; two brothers, Junior Smith of Hamilton and Melvin Smith of Independence, Mo.; three sisters, Rosalie Rues of Shawnee, Mary Zimmerman of Paola and Evelyn Clearwater of Topeka; and four grandchildren.

The funeral was Friday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Pallbearers were Kenneth Darner, Randy Smith, Dennis Smith, Bob Clearwater, Melvin Smith and Jim Byard. Burial was in Highland Cemetery at Parker.
