Alexander married Harriet M. Brown in Warren County, Illinois on December 25, 1849. He worked as a farmer before serving as a Sergeant in the Union Army (Company E of the 83rd Illinois Infantry Regiment). Alexander enlisted at Knox, Illinois on August 5, 1862. In February 1863, Alexander engaged in combat with Confederate troops commanded by future Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was mustered out on June 26, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee, having reverted to the rank of Private. In 1868, Alexander was working as a night watchman at the Galesburg, Illinois factory of George W. Brown, who patented industrial corn-planters.

Alexander's middle initial was recorded as "B" in the marriage record index of Warren County, Illinois, but is written as "R" in an 1898 federal record of veterans' gravestones.
