Mark D. Rorick was born in Bad Axe, MI, where his father was the editor and publisher of a newspaper titled the Bad Axe Democrat. When he was about 10 years old, he moved with his parents to Klickitat County, WA. and then to The Dalles, OR.

After working as a grocery store clerk in The Dalles, he joined the Navy and spent the rest of his career in public service. He served as a Chief Yeoman on the U.S.S. Minneapolis about 1920. He also worked as a recruiter for the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Salt Lake City for many years.

After a number of years in the Navy Reserve, during which time he worked for the War Department as a civilian employee, he was recalled to duty during World War II and served in various capacities. As a Chief Yeoman, his chief responsibilities during World War II were overseeing the outfitting ships under construction in shipyards in Norfolk and other ports.

Mark D. Rorick was married three times: to Loretta L. Taylor (in 1909), Elsa C. Ohlson (in 1924), and Williemae "Billie" Dettmar (in 1933). His children with Loretta Taylor were Loretta Rorick Bolmen Stokke and Helen Rorick Guichard. His son with Elsa Olson was Mark Duane Rorick. He also adopted Elsa's daughter, LaNea Kern, also known as LaNea Rorick Schaefer. Mark and Billie adopted my mother, Mary Ellen.
