He joined the Army in November 1965, took basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, and completed basic flight training school at Fort Wolters, TX, and later at Fort Rucker, AL. He served as a Huey helicopter pilot in an assault helicopter company for his first Vietnam tour of duty from March 1967 to January 1968, accumulating more than 1,200 combat flying hours. He became a 1LT in the Army Transportation Corps and completed 20 years of military service, retiring as a MAJ and master aviator in the Army Aviation Corps in 1985.
