2115 Private D O'Brien, 1st Battalion the Royal Munster Fusiliers. The Battalion arrived in South Africa before the Second Anglo Boer War commenced and secured the lines of communication for the Kimberley relief force. After the relief of Kimberley they operated for a time between Orange River and Warrenton and during the advance to Pretoria were taken to the Kroonstad-Lindley district. They were part of Paget's brigade that captured Bethlehem on 7 Jul 1900. In Aug 1900 they operated in the districts north of Pretoria, where they had a good deal of fighting. Private O'Brien died of disease in a military hospital in Pretoria. He is also commemorated on the Royal Munster Fusiliers war memorial in Muckross Road, near junction with East Avenue Road, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=94).
