Son of John and Sarah C. (Bingey) Scott. His father was a successful merchant in Washington, D. C.

On January 12, 1885, he married Kittie A. Wilson, a daughter of James A. and Sarah M. (Edwards) Wilson, natives of Michigan. They became parents of five children, Lee E., George E., James, Ruth A. and Lew. Jim became a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox.

George W. Scott was well known as a photographer for his series of formal portraits of Native Americans while he operated a studio at Fort Yates, Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation in North Dakota.

Died of carcinoma of the stomach. He had been in California for 3 weeks. He was an employee of the Weather Bureau, and was in charge of the Lander, Wyoming Weather Bureau.
