Dr. A. Wilbur Duryee, cardiovascular specialist ~ A Life Remembered

GREAT BARRINGTON -
Dr. A. Wilbur Duryee, 94, of 120 Castle St., a former cardiovascular specialist and professor in clinical medicine at New York University Hospital in New York City, died yesterday at home.

A native of Cherry Hill. New Jersey, he was born July 5, 1899, son of the Rev. Abram Duryee and Margaret Clarke Duryee. He attended school in Jersey City and received his bachelor of science degree in 1921 from Rutgers University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1925, he received his medical degree from Columbia University, and he completed his internship and residency at a New York Post-graduate Hospital.

Dr. Duryee, certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1937, was an attending physician at University and Bellevue hospitals in New York City. He was also a consultant in medicine to St. Claire's Hospital and consultant in vascular diseases to Englewood Hospital He was author of 24 articles on vascular diseases and author of four chapters in books on internal medicine and surgery. He was a member of the American Medical Association, state and local societies, American College of Physicians and the American Society of Industrial Medicine. He was a fellow and past president of the American Therapeutic Association, past president of the New York Heart Association and past vice president of the American Heart Association, from which he received an award for merit.

He moved to Great Harrington in 1986 from Pawling, New York, where he had resided for 40 years While there, he was a member of the Quaker Hill Country. Club and the Rotary Club.

He leaves a wife, the former Helen D. Moore, whom he married December 30, 1944; two daughters, Mrs. Deborah Burde of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and Mrs. Mary Ellen Dixon of Braford, and eight grandchildren. A son, A.W. "Bill" Duryee Jr., died August 9, 1993.

The funeral will be Saturday at 9:15 from Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Peter's Church by 'the Rev. Merle Lavoie, pastor, and the Rev. David J. Riley, pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Sherman, Connecticut. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 6 at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bill Duryee scholarship fund at Berkshire School, New York Heart Association or Hospice Care in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home.
