Helen Eugenia Davis McCluney June 28, 1933 - February 12, 2022

Gaffney, S.C. - Helen Eugenia Davis McCluney, 88, born June 28, 1933, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at home.

Born in Gaffney, she was the former wife of Joseph "Joe" McCluney and daughter of the late Edna Davis Hughey and stepdaughter of the late Albert Hughey. She was reared as a daughter in the home of her maternal grandparents, John A. and Denora Sanders Davis.

Ms. McCluney was a graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College where she earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education. She also attended Spartanburg Technical College receiving an Associate Degree in Basic Accounting. She retired from the Child Development Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Ms. McCluney was a charter member of CHAPS and a member of The Gaffney Business and Professional Women's Club, having held all positions in the club. She was a former ten-year volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Ms. McCluney was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served as a Primary Teacher, Visiting Teacher and Family History Consultant. She was a former member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Shelia Wood and Deborah McCluney-Dover, both of Gaffney. She is also survived by her former son-in-law Jeffrey Dover. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by four grandchildren, Zeb Vance Wood II, reared in the home, of Gaffney, South Carolina, Alex McCluney-Dover of Beirut, Lebanon, Denora Mullinax of Gaffney and Larry Ray Easler of Gaffney, and five great-grandchildren, Zeb Vance Wood III and Averi Alexis Wood of Clemson, South Carolina, Tyler Mullinax and Sean Leonard of Gaffney, and Johnathan Hughey of Greenville, South Carolina; and one great great-grandchild, Travis Mullinax of Gaffney. Also surviving are two nephews, Michael Edwin Hughey and Barry Sanders, both of Gaffney, two nieces, Sherry Hughey Brown (Timothy) of Gaffney and Connie Hughey Greene of Hollis, North Carolina, two great-nephews, Jason Hughey of Gulf Breeze, Florida and Kevin Eagle (Milissa) of Anderson, South Carolina; a great-niece, MaKenzie Hughey of Gaffney a special friend, Emuel "Sonny" Pursley of Hickory Grove, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Gibson, a son-in-law, Jon Zeb Wood, two brothers, Carl Edwin Hughey and Charles Wayne Hughey, and two sisters, Sybil Hughey Pursley and Betty Sanders.

The family would like to extend special thanks to special friends and caregivers Dianne Fowler, Dorothy Morgan, Mary Beth Phillips, Janet Hemphill, Amanda Grigg, Shelby and Lynn Lawhon, Susie Owensby, Chris Wessinger and Michelle Broome.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Manfred Martin and Bishop Doug Fowler officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Sardis United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8094, Gaffney, S.C. 29342.

The family will be at the home of Deborah McCluney-Dover, 423 South Petty Street, Gaffney, South Carolina.
