J. Joseph Edgette, Ph.D., age 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Glenolden, Pa., on Saturday, February 12, 2022. He received his bachelor's and two master's degrees from West Chester State College, and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a professor at Widener University for most of his career, retiring as professor emeritus and folklorist emeritus. He was also an adjunct professor at Villanova University for several years. He was a recipient of many awards for his scholarship in the fields of folklore, history, and cemeteries and grave markers, among them the Harriette Merrifield Forbes from the Association for Gravestone Studies in 2015, the Loretta Lorance Award from the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association in 2017, and the A. Lewis Smith Award from the Delaware County Historical Society in 2018. He was chair of the Cemeteries and Grave Markers area of the American Culture Association and co-chair of the Death in American Culture area of the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association. In addition to his parents, William J. Edgette and Anna S. Edgette, he was predeceased by sister Elizabeth A. Doyle and brother Francis A. Edgette. He is survived by several nieces and a nephew. Viewing will be Friday, February 18, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM at Cavanagh Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood. Funeral Mass 11 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1 Fatima Way (South Avenue), Secane.
