She grew up in Baltimore and attended the University of Maryland at College Park. Joan met Nathan Sachs in the 8th grade and they married in 1955. While living in Baltimore they welcomed their children. In 1962, the family moved to Henderson.
Joan was a consummate homemaker and helpmate to her husband in his various business pursuits. She had many talents including sewing, cross-stitch and needle point and her home is filled with beautiful examples of her work. She was an active volunteer in her children's schools when they were young and also volunteered at Maria Parham Hospital's visitor desk for many years. An avid reader, Joan was active with Friends of the Perry Memorial Library.
Joan was a loving wife, proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a beloved aunt and great aunt. She was proceeded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Nathan and her parents and sister Marilyn Levin. Joan is survived by her daughter Susan; her son; her grandson and her two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law as well as 3 nephews and 5 nieces and 10 great nieces and nephews.
A burial service will be held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery at 11:30 am Thursday, February 17. The family will receive visitors at 529 St. Andrews Church Road, Henderson on Thursday, February 17 from 3- 6 pm. Joan will be missed terribly by her family and friends and remembered for her generosity and tenacious spirit.
The family wishes to acknowledge and extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Community Home Care and Hospice especially Carrie and Holly as well as Mary , Gloria and Jackie, ("The A Team") for the excellent care they provided and for making it possible for her family to fulfill Joan's wish to remain in her home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation can be made to H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library, Ruin Creek Animal Protection Service or Community Home Health and Hospice in Henderson, or a charity of the donors choosing.
