Aberdeen Press and Journal - Tuesday 15 July 1919, p 3:
THE LATE MR JOHN HENDRY, BRAEMAR. Many Scotland and England will learn with regret that Mr John Hendry, sen., one the best-known residents in Braemar, and who has been engaged business there for years and was subpostmaster for 48 years, has passed away in his 84th year. For the past three years deceased had not been in robust health. A native of Banffshire, Mr Hendry came in early youth to assist Mr Peter Geddes, clothier and general merchant, whose eldest daughter he married. On the death of his father-in-law 55 years ago, he entered into partnership with his mother-in-law; and 20 years ago assumed two of his sons as partners, after a considerable period of sole ownership. Mr Hendry had seen the gradual rise of Braemar as a summer resort, and had come into close contact with many of the prominent visitors who frequent the district. Enterprising, and with close attention to his work, the opportunity offered him, and developed the business to meet the growing needs of the community.
In politics Mr Hendry was a Liberal. In his prime, he was an outstanding curler, famous as skip and prize winner—other hobbies of his were cycling, billiards, and draughts, in which he excelled. Mr Hendry was a devoted Churchman, and was senior elder in the U.F. Church. His wife predeceased him 17 years ago, and he is survived by a family 4 sons and 4 daughters:William and John are in the business; his second son is the Rev P.G. Hendry. F.A., Paxton; the youngest son Alexander Hendry. M.D. M.V.O., Ballater, medical officer to H.M.'s Household, Balmoral, Mr D. Morgan, banker, Peterhead, and Mr John Ewan, builder, Braemar, are sons-in-law. The deceased was a member of the Public Library Committee for 52 years, and a member of committee of the Victoria Hall, Auchendryne, since 1887. The funeral takes place tomorrow to Braemar Churchyard.
