Tom was born in Englewood, New Jersey on May 23, 1933, the first of three children born to Lisle and Harriett Adkins. He graduated from Colerain High School near Cincinnati, where he was a starting guard for the basketball team and both an offensive guard and a defensive tackle for the football team, while also playing trumpet in the marching band at halftime. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, from which he graduated in three years. After graduating he married his high school sweetheart Nancy Theobald, with whom he had three boys.
Tom began his career in marketing in the New York headquarters of Lever Brothers and later joined the Young & Rubicam advertising agency in Manhattan. In 1973 Y&R promoted him to a Vice Presidency and sent him to Houston to supervise Y&R's work for one of the world's largest oil companies. While in Houston he met the love of his life, Jeannie Tate, whom he married in 1978. Tom and Jeannie lived and worked in Houston, Dallas, New York and Taipei City, Taiwan. While living in Taipei, Tom and Jeannie traveled extensively throughout Asia. In 1989 he retired in The Woodlands, where he and Jeannie played tennis and golf at The Woodlands Country Club, took care of their pets, spent time with friends they loved dearly, and launched many trips around the U.S. and abroad.
In 2005 Tom became certified to teach grades 4-8. He worked as a substitute math teacher in The Woodlands and also enjoyed driving a school bus. He served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Forest Lake Townhomes Homeowners Association for many years and, until his stroke, he also operated a management company for the HOA.
Tom enjoyed nothing more than spending time with Jeannie and their friends, traveling and enjoying great restaurants. He accomplished the vast majority of his "bucket list" of places he wanted to go and things he wanted to do. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeannie, and is survived by his sons Tom Jr., Terry and Tim, his daughters-in law Debra, Liz and Thao, his four grandchildren, Tom, Kellene, Michael and Chris, by his two great-grandchildren, Liam and Lana, and by his Godson Jonathan Routh. He is also survived by his sister Lyn Morris and her family and by his late brother Gerry's wife Ann Peoples and her husband Roger and their family.
