When he was two years of age, his mother died. His father married again, six months later, to Susannah Eaker.
The family lived on and farmed the land where the Crites Cemetery is now located. In 1844, when James was 20 years of age, he was married to Frances "Fannie" Coots. Fannie's family owned a farm in the same area. Together they were to have 11 children. For a time they also provided a home for two of the children of James'deceased brother Joel.
James died on April 4, 1878, at the age of 54. He is buried in the Crites Cemetery. His stone was not found in 2010.
