W. "Bill" W. Ferguson
November 26, 1914 - January 1, 2008
Little Rock , AR

W. W. "Bill" Ferguson, age 93, died at home in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 1, 2008. Born November 26, 1914 at Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Gilbert and Maude Ferguson, he was one of 9 children. Bill's father was a revenue agent for the state of Alabama and his apprehension of moonshiners brought about a serious death threat from them. As a result he moved his family to the Mississippi Delta country in 1917.

Bill graduated from Mississippi Delta Junior College and enrolled at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. While there he met Grace Dyck from Hutchinson, Kansas who had gone south on a voice scholarship. They were married in Hutchinson, Kansas, Grace's hometown, on August 18, 1939. After marriage they settled in West Point, Mississippi where Bill taught and became principal of the junior high school for 4 years. In the meantime, Bill attended the University of Kansas in summers where he received his Master's degree in School Administration.

After receiving the advance degree, Bill was principal of the high schools of Belmont, Harper, and Wellington, Kansas. His school administration was interrupted by service in the U. S. Army Chemical Warfare Service. He has been a member of the Lyle Rishel post for 60 consecutive years.

In 1948, Bill and Grace moved to Hutchinson, Kansas where he went into the real estate business with the McNaghten Investment Company, which had been founded in 1918. While in the Real Estate business, Bill took summers to go to the University of Wisconsin and Southern Methodist University to study Real Estate Appraising for which he received the coveted M.A.I. designation. In 1947 Bill was elected President of McNaghten Investment Company with real estate, insurance and mortgage lending as their business, with offices in the new First National Bank Building.

After moving to Hutchinson in 1948, Bill was very active in civic affairs. He was President of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, which was very active at that time; President of the Reno County Red Cross for two terms, and of the Hutchinson Board of Education for 8 years, being president when the High School was built. He was on the Committee, which was to actively support the popular vote to build the Arena in 1950. Bill and Grace were active members of Trinity Methodist Church where Bill was elected President of the Administrative Board for 2 years.

Perhaps one of Bill's greatest accomplishments was to begin the work toward the establishment of Wesley Towers in the late 1970's.

Although not noted as a philanthropist, he established scholarships in his wife's name (deceased in 1997) at Wesley Towers. He also gave funds for a Presidential Scholarship at the Junior College and funds for the Library, Hutchinson Community Foundation, Hutchinson Hospital Foundation and Meals on Wheels. Bill's major donation was to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for scholarships.

Bill and Grace have two daughters, Mrs. H. C. (Grace) Williams of Heber Springs, Arkansas and Judy Sims of Little Rock, Arkansas. They have three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and four great-grandsons.

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 4, 2008 at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle. Arrangements are by Roller-Chenal Funeral Home (501)224-8300.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to the Bill and Grace Ferguson Scholarship Fund at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson, Kansas or to the Jones Eye Institute/UAMS, 4301 West Markham Street #523, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.
