His father was Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, a Korean independence activist and one of the early leaders of the Korean-American immigrant community in the United States. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, Ralph enlisted in the US Navy, one of about 100 Korean-Americans who served over the course of WWII. After the war, he became an actor like his older brother, Philip Ahn, one of the first Asian American actors. Having been active as an actor since the early 1950s, he gained national recognition as an actor for his role as Tran in the hit sitcom New Girl from 2012 to 2018. He also coached high school football and taught high school math.
