James Donnan joined the Army in Brisbane on 28 November 1940, and on it becoming an entity was assigned to "A" Company 2/26 Infantry Battalion and represented the Battalion in a Rugby Union game against the 2/30 Battalion held on 5th April 1941, during training at Bathurst, New South Wales.
On 22 June 1941, he transferred to the R.A.A.F. becoming 412120 Flying Officer 36 Squad.
He was the son of James and Janet Donnan and husband of Dorothy Donnan of Milton, Brisbane, Queensland.
