In 1860, he was a railroader presumably living in or near Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found with certainty in that census but is in the 1863-65 draft registration residing in Harrisburg. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and gray eyes. He married Johanna "Jennie" Thomas and fathered Emma C. (b. @1861) and William Simon Cameron (b. 08/16/64).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-seven in Harrisburg August 19, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 25 as a private with Co. E, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.

After the war, he was both a fireman and the Dauphin County register of wills and recorder of deeds. According to his obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent, his funeral procession was a veritable parade. He earned glowing obituaries none of which names the cemetery in which he is buried other than it was somewhere in Harrisburg and possibly in Paxton. The attached burial listing pinpoints his grave site.
