Sarah Hughes Rhoads
Sarah Ann Ireton was born Feb. 4, 1856, at Cincinnati, Ohio With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ireton, she moved to Winfield in 1872.

She was united in marriage to James Hughes, April 29, 1874, at Wichita and they made their home northeast of Arkansas City. To this union seven children were born, two of whom preceded her in death, John at the age of 18 months and Charles at the age of eight years.

Mr. and Mrs. Hughes moved to the family home, 502 North Sixth street in 1918. Mr. Hughes died Aug. 21, 1921. Mrs. Hughes was married to Ben C. Rhoads Feb. 4, 1925. Mr. Rhoads passed away May 1941.

Mrs. Rhoads was a resident of Cowley county 73 years and died at her home at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 10, at the age of 91. Survivors include three sons and two daughters; J. Ben Hughes, Butler, Okla., Ed D. Hughes, Cimarron, Kas., J.L. Hughes, Arkansas City, Mrs. Mabel Ramsey, Arkansas City, and Mrs. Pearl Snodgrass, Los Angeles; 22 grandchildren, and 36 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rhoads were held Wednesday, August 13, at 9 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Father Arthur Holtz officiating. Interment was made n the Parker Cemetery. Pallbearers were George Ireton, Ross Somers, George Bacastow, Clyde Lind, Walter Ramsey and Charles Edward Hughes.
