Governor. Thomas Gore Browne was a soldier in the British Army who rose to the rank of colonel after serving in the First Anglo-Afghan War with the 41st Regiment of Foot. After his service with various British regiments, he was appointed as Governor of the island of Saint Helena in 1851 and served in this position for three years, taking steps to improve the islands clean water supply. In 1855, Robert Wynyard was replaced by Browne as Governor of New Zealand where he served for six years. His controversial handling of land issues in the Waitara Valley lead to further battles between rebelling Māori and the New Zealand Government including the Invasion of the Waikato. After his service to New Zealand, he was appointed Governor of Tasmania. He spent his longest period as Governor in Tasmania where he developed its education system and encouraged immigration. After this he served a brief time as Administrator of Bermuda. He was awarded the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George as well the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.
