David J. Barkley, 50, of Sioux City died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at his residence after a long battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gary Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

David was born Dec. 7, 1957, in Sioux City, the son of James F. and Carole J. (Weber) Barkley. He attended St. Michael's Grade School and graduated from Heelan High School in 1977. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident.

He married Cheryl Skalla in 1985. To this union, four children were born. He married Kim Baker in 2006.

After high school, Dave worked for Brower Construction and then moved to Kansas City for two years. He returned to Sioux City and started Barkley Asphalt in 1980. He owned and operated Barkley Asphalt until suffering from ill health.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Little Yellow Dog. He enjoyed donating to and helping charities such as the Boys Club and The United Way.

Dave enjoyed camping and traveling to Mexico with his children. He had a great love of nature.

Survivors include his wife, Kim of Sioux City; four children, Kyle Barkley in the U.S. Navy serving on the U.S.S. Germantown based in San Diego, Calif., and Rachel Barkley, Erin Barkley and Joseph Barkley, all of Sioux City; his mother, Carole Barkley of Sioux City; six brothers and sisters, Bonnie Barkley, Ed (Janet) Barkley, Larry Barkley, Steve (Shelly) Barkley, Andy Barkley and Ann Barkley, all of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Amy Baker of Chatsworth, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Grace Beck; his stepfather-in-law, Fred Beck; a grandson, Keion Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Barkley; a brother, Paul Barkley; and a nephew, Nick Barkley.

Casket bearers will be Dale, Mike, Dennis, Gary and Jack Barkley, Eric Henkowski, Norm Cockrell and Jerry Poss.

Honorary pallbearers will be Byron Jauer, Joel Shay, Tim Puepke and Dave's brothers.

Memorials may be directed to an education fund for his children or Hospice of Siouxland.
