Born January 5, 1934 in (Mylo Park) Ebensburg, Pa., she was a daughter to the late Roy Orbin Empfield and the former Amelia Melinda Chick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Raymond Koerber.
Jo'an began her Higher education in 1952 earning her Bachelors in Science in Secondary Education with a major in Biological Science, Social Studies and Geography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, credited education in Elementary Education at Edinboro, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Michigan. She continued on to earn her Masters in Education at PSU.
In 1990, she attended the Beijing College of Economics in China for seminars in Chinese Culture, Language, History and Education. She taught in various school districts throughout her many years of service.
Jo'an's involvement in various organizations, memberships and societies throughout the years exemplified her caring nature to serve and give back.
The Jersey Shore Business and Professional Women's Club, Order of Amaranth, Order of the Eastern Star, Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouts, Jersey Shore Historical Society, the Grace Lutheran Church and she and her family members were all members of the Lock Haven Community Orchestra playing a variety of musical instruments for many years. She was a founding member of AAUW (American Association of University Women) in Lock Haven.
She enjoyed music (violin), sewing, cooking, playing bridge and had a deep love for gardening.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Kenneth T. Settlemyer; three sons, Kenneth Jr. (Heather), Jonathan (Romy), and Timothy (Sara) Settlemyer; two grandchildren, Shandra Lin and Kenneth Ian; her siblings, identical twin sister, Roian Koerber and brother, Chick (Ethel) Empfield.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at Grace Lutheran Church, 220 Maple St., Jersey Shore, with a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. with Eastern Star and Amaranth services following at 11 a.m. prior to a celebration of her life; all visitors are invited to the conclusion of this celebration at the newly refurbished chapel where she will be laid to rest in the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
The Family will provide the flowers. Those who wish are asked to memorialize Jo'an with a donation to the Memorial Fund of Grace Lutheran Church or any other similar facility of their choice.
