Obituary for Avis A Barrett
Avis A. Barrett, age 87, of Murphysboro, passed away on March 5, 2022 in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale from post-operative complications.

She was born to parents Max Ogle and Hazel Ogle Swartz, on July 7, 1934 in Oil City, PA. She graduated from Cranberry High School, Cranberry Township Pennsylvania. After high school she attended Secretarial School. She began her career working for the National Education Association in Washington, D.C. When moving to Murphysboro she was employed at the Jackson County Health Department. She retired in 1997 after 34 years of service.

She was a long time member of the The Ridge Church where she taught Sunday School for 30 plus years. She especially loved teaching and decorating her classroom for Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital auxiliary and enjoyed working in the gift shop. She was an avid reader and passed the love of reading to her children. Other hobbies include crafting and building jigsaw puzzles.

Avis and Donald were married in August of 1972, in Jonesboro, IL.
Both brought children into the marriage and together had one of their own.

Avis is survived by her husband, Donald R. Barrett of Murphysboro; her children, Charlene Mileur (Mark) of Murphysboro; Paula Turnbaugh (Roger) of Elkville; John J. Morber (Jeannine) of Baltimore, MD; Donna Adams (Don) of Springfield; five grandchildren, Joshua Mileur (Kathy) of Murphysboro; Ashley Golliher (Preston) of Sesser; Zachary Mileur (Natalie) of Carbondale; Grace and Jacob Adams of Springfield; four great grandchildren, Reece Mileur, Lyric and Emersyn Golliher and Keller Mileur.

She is also survived by the extended family of John Morber (1913-2001) whose love and support throughout the years meant so much to her.
Cremation rites have been accorded.

A Memorial Service for Avis Barrett will be Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at 1:00 pm in The Ridge Church, Carbondale with Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the hour of service.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged and may be directed the Perry County Humane Society, DuQuoin and/or to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital auxiliary nursing scholarship fund. To share condolences online, visit www.crainsonline.com
