6586 Trooper Charles Baker Simpson, 27th Company, 7th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. On 8 Dec 1900 he was with his company as part of a column of 1500 men, 9 cannons and over 100 wagons and they camped at Nooitgedacht, 3 miles NW of Hekpoort, west of Pretoria. Four companies of the Northumberland Fusiliers were holding the ridges overlooking the camp. They were attacked by a Boer force of about 1500 men under Generals Koos de la Rey and Christiaan Beyers. Beyers attacked the ridges with 4 of the 6 commandos, killing or capturing the Fusiliers, before turning on the main encampment. The Boers looted the stores before being driven off. Trooper Simpson was one of those killed in the battle. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were later reinterred at Krugersdorp. He is commemorated on a memorial plaque in All Saints Church, Bank Square, Dulverton, West Somerset, Somerset, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/24534) and on the Devonshire Boer War memorial in the North Transept of Exeter Cathedral, 1 The Cloisters, Exeter, Devon, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/25220).
