"Bob" was born on August 20, 1923, in Malden. After attending the Wyman School and Woburn High in the Class of 1941, he went to night school at Bentley's School of Accounting. He was an Honor student all through High School and in his senior year was chosen Junior Rotarian. Being musically inclined, he played the trombone in the school orchestra and was a gifted pianist. In the athletic field, he played basketball and tennis and was an ardent hockey fan.

Upon graduation he entered the employ of the Tanner's National Bank and from there entered the service on April 15, 1943. A member of the Methodist Church, he devoted much time to the Youth Fellowship activities.

He received his military training at Southwest University, Memphis, and was cadet at Ellington Field in Texas. He received his wings and was commissioned a Second Lieut. at San Marcos, Texas, on March 18, 1944, and was assigned to a B-17 as Navigator. In England on June 1, 1944, he took part in the 8th Air Force second shuttle mission to Russia and Italy in July. On August 26, 1944, he had started out on his 26th mission and was gaining altitude, when his plane was crashed by another B-17 in the fog. He was buried in the American Military Cemetery, Cambridge, England. He had received the following awards: 2 Air Medals, 3 Oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation.
