Adam Clarence Fox was born in Bennettsville, Indiana the 4th of 9 children born to Peter Fox and Augusta (Schottmueller) Fox. Adam enlisted in the Army in 1909 and was a member of the 27th Infantry stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was honorably discharged in 1912. He married Anna Thoms October of 1913 in Cook County, Illinois. Adam and Anna had three daughters, Mildred born in 1915, Helen in 1916 and Shirley in 1920. The family resided in Highland Park, Illinois and Adam was employed as a truck driver. In July of 1921 Adam decided to take a trip to Southern Indiana to visit his family and have them meet his wife and children as he had not been home since he enlisted in the Army. This should have been a very happy time for the family as they had also recently learned Anna was expecting the couple's 4th child.
On July 8th in Crothersville, Indiana, just a few hours from their destination, the auto they were driving in stalled on a train track and was hit by a commuter train. Both Mildred and Helen were killed instantly. Adam, Anna and Shirley were removed to the nearest hospital in Seymour, Indiana. Anna died the following day, July 9th, with Adam following on July 10th. Neither regained consciousness after the accident. Shirley had been seated on her Mother's lap during the trip and was thus shielded from the worst of the impact by her Mother's body. She remained in the hospital both in Indiana and then in Illinois for many months before recovering. As an orphan she was raised to adulthood by her Maternal Grandmother. Shirley passed away in 1997.
