Samuel "Sam" Achtermann, age 83, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Wilmington Heath Care Center with his family by his side. Sam was born August 13, 1933 in Warren County the son of the late Carl and Edna Hutchinson Achtermann. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. Sam was a long-time member of the New Antioch Church of Christ where he had served as a Deacon and Elder, a lifetime farmer, and retired after 30 years of service to General Motors in the Harrison Radiator Division. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Betty J. Cochran Achtermann, to whom he married September 22, 1956 in Butlerville. Also surviving are three children, Dale and his wife Debbie Achtermann of New Vienna, Duane and his wife Judy Achtermann of Oakwood, and David Achtermann of Martinsville; brother Robert Achtermann; grandchildren, Brent (Brooke) Achtermann, Greg (Kristina) Achtermann, Keith (Britny Freeman) Achtermann, Bradley Achtermann, Brooke Achtermann, Bryan (Renee) Achtermann, Sarah (Nick) Compton, Samantha Achtermann, and Luke Achtermann; and great grandchildren, Gregary, Elaina, Abby, Adlynn, and Morgan. In addition to his parents, Sam is preceded in death by four siblings, Ralph and Edward Achtermann, Esther Lazirko, and Edna Seaman. In accordance with his wishes Sam was cremated. A Celebration of Sam's Life will be held with a service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the New Antioch Church of Christ. Dale Achtermann will lead the services. Military Honors will be accorded at the church by the Clinton County Honor Guard. Following services, the Celebration will continue with a meal in the fellowship hall of the church, all are invited. Memorial contributions are directed to the Foster Boyd Cancer Center, 31 Farquar Avenue, Wilmington, Ohio 45177, or Community Care Hospice, P.O. 123 Wilmington, Ohio 45177.
