STERLING--Helen C., 92, died peacefully April 10, 2014 in Manhattan where she lived with her son, David B. Sterling, grandchildren, Liana Sterling and Alexander O. Sterling and former daughter-in-law, Nora Lavori. She also leaves her son Eric E. Sterling, daughter-in-law June Beittel, and granddaughter Maya Sterling, of Chevy Chase, MD, her brother Frederick Champnella of Florida, and devoted nieces, nephews and friends. Her husband, Bowen Sterling, companion, Jack Fox, Sr. and her sister Hazel Malone predeceased her. A coal miner's daughter, born in Kingwood, WV, Helen was a graduate of West Virginia University School of Journalism and served as editor-in-chief of the The Daily Atheneum. For nearly twenty years, she worked as a technical editor at IBM and rose to become one of its first female managers. Sound of mind and body, Helen was the exemplar of graceful aging.
