Thomas was born in North Carolina and served in the Civil War on the Conferedate Side. He enlisted in December 1860. In 1868 he married Amanda C. Kendrick and later they moved to Tennessee. In 1880 they were living in Campbell County. They had 4 girls Barbara, Sallie, Florence, and Alice. Amanda died in 1881. Thomas was left with the little girls and he married Sarah Branscomb Smith in 1885. They had no children. Sarah and Thomas lived in the same area till their death.
Thomas is buried in the cemetery at Macedonia Baptist Church in Jacksboro, TN. His tombstone has a one way sign on it.
