Leola Ann Bates – 75, Stewiacke, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, at home, following a period of ill health. Born in Upper Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Florence (Fleck) Hutchinson.

Leola worked with MT&T as an operator until having children. Then, she worked at Searle's Greenhouses in Middle Stewiacke; her boys remember getting off the bus and hanging out with her at the greenhouses until they were old enough to stay at home on their own after school. In later years, she worked at Truro Answering Service and Paradise Taxi until she retired.

Being the oldest child in her family, she wasn't only the "Big Sister" but she took on the role of a Mother figure for her younger siblings. Family was always first with Leola, caring for her younger siblings and then raising her own children.

She absolutely loved cooking and baking; everyone wanted one of her cakes with boiled icing for their birthday and a piece of her lemon pie at Christmas. She also loved to travel, having visited Florida, Alberta, Ontario and many other family vacation destinations. Many will treasure her gifts of knitted items and remember her love of fishing and a good game of crib. She was a member of Middle Stewiacke United Church where she was also a member of the UCW.

Leola is survived by her sons, Brent (Anna) Bates, Regina, Saskatchewan; Kevin (Renee) Bates, Stewiacke; grandchildren, Kraig, Gregory, Garrett, Courtney; great grandchildren, Daycee, Deacon; brother, Sterling (Cindy) Hutchinson, Thorhild, Alberta; sisters, Mary (Reg) Sill, Middle Stewiacke; Linda (Dale) Begbie, London, Ontario; Wendy (David) Logan, Upper Musquodoboit; several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Walter Bates; sister, Pauline Dyke; grandson, Korey Bates.

Special thanks are extended to all of the health care team who cared for and supported Leola and her family over the years.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Middle Stewiacke United Church, 21 Cloverdale Road, Middle Stewiacke, Reverend Michael Henderson officiating. (Face masks are encouraged; thank you for your co-operation.) Interment in Middle Stewiacke Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Leola's memory to Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Leola's obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
