Johann Daniel Kuntz (Kuhns, Cuntz) was born in 1766 to Bartholomaus Kuntz and his wife Anna Christina Heussler (Heissler), who both immigrated to the new world as children. Both their immigration and Daniel's birth are well documented, the latter in the records of the Jordan Lutheran Church in Orefield, which is right on the border of Upper Macungie, Lowhill and Whitehall Townships In what was then Northampton County, before it became Lehigh.

Daniel was the second of at least ten children, and the oldest son. His father Bartholomaus, the son of Hans Michael Kuntz and Anna Eva Bender of Lynn Township, was a modest laborer who worked in Macungie. Christina, Daniel's mother, was one of the younger daughters of George Heussler and Eva Elizabeth Monius, who lived in the area of Whitehall in the 1750-1760s.

Daniel must have been a teenager when his parents decided to move to Westmoreland County, PA in about 1781-1782. For reasons unknown, Daniel remained in the area, most likely with some Acker relatives in Weissenberg Township, or one of his Kuntz uncles in Lynn Township.

In 1792, Daniel married Catharina Miller, the daughter of a local farmer in Lynn Township. They lived in Weissenberg Township, having two girls (Maria and Elizabeth) and three known boys, (George, Daniel and David). The census numbers show that another boy might have been born yet died as a child.

In his will Daniel names his children, and leaves his eldest son George with the house and some land. Ironically, Daniel might have lived quite close to Lynn, as his daughter Elizabeth marries a Grimm, the same family his uncle Michael and cousin Daniel Kuntz married into. One almost wonders if he inherited some property or it was given to him by his father in trust.

Bothe Daniel and Catherine are buried somewhere in Ziegels, as are some of their descendants.
