Commissioned 1st Lieutenant on May 20, 1861. He served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee. In a letter dated February 17, 1862 he states "no one in Company I desires to reenlist for 2 years under the January 1, 1862 Law of the Confederate States". He was relieved of duty by order of the War Department and ordered to report to Richmond on April 27, 1862. Applied for a soldier's pension (#S14417) in Gibson County.
William Houston helped to build the First Methodist Church of Humboldt in 1867, now one of the historical sites of the city.
William Houston married first Malisa Jennings on Jan 2, 1856.

Robert Hatton and fought the entire war in Virginia. He came to Humboldt about 1867. He built many local houses and buildings. He was a member of the Humboldt Methodist Church at 12th Avenue & Crenshaw. He was born May 6, 1830 in Gladeville, Wilson County, and died Aug. 2, 1918 in Humboldt, TN.
