Betty Pearl Nelson McDougald died March 25, 2022 in Round Rock, Williamson County, Texas. She was born on August 30, 1939, to Syble (Smedley) and Joe Nelson in Pasadena, Texas. She graduated from Pasadena High School, then she married Joe Dan McDougald on January 3, 1958. Betty worked primarily as a stay-at-home mom and as a dedicated amateur genealogist. Her research allowed her to join the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Moon-McGhee Chapter (named for one of her ancestors) and the Daughters of the American Revolution, John McKnitt Alexander Chapter, where she served as an officer for many years.

Her love of genealogy meant that her children spent many hours in cemeteries while she searched for ancestral grave markers. Upon the publication of genealogy software for home computers, Betty acquired her original PC and soon found herself on a first-name basis with the genealogy software's entire tech support team as she requested numerous features and capabilities the designers had never planned for. We have speculated that her extensive requests made her an uncredited content-contributor for the next generation of genealogy software.

In addition to her genealogy, Betty participated in numerous Bible-studies over the years, sometimes reaching beyond United Methodist curricula. And she simply loved to read. She instilled that love for reading in all three of her children, teaching us that boredom can always be solved by another trip to the local library.

While her kids were in school, Betty volunteered with the PTA for big projects and small ones, organizing carnivals, serving as a co-treasurer with Joe, and filling many other positions. She was also a volunteer with her church where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women and (with Joe) of the Searchers Class, taking a hiatus from the Searchers Class only during the years she taught Sunday School to Fair Haven's high-schoolers, and later when her dementia began to get the best of her.

Despite these commitments, Betty still found time to engage in needlepoint, crochet afghans, and knit Christmas stockings for each of her descendants while serving plenty of home-cooked meals and teaching her children how to properly clean a house. Our home was so welcoming, many of our friends who came over after school also began calling her "Mom."

Betty is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 54 years. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Walter Rogers, sister, Anne Knott (John); sons Steve (Carolyn) and David (Joyce Curry) and daughter Donna Peacock (John); grandchildren Joshua (Carey) Hill, Blake Barker, Hannah Curry-McDougald, Zachariah Curry-McDougald, Brian McDougald, Elizabeth Peacock (Erik Moses), Sarah Peacock, and Braden McDougald; four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial will be held at Fair Haven United Methodist Church, 1330 Gessner, Houston, 77055 at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022, with refreshments to follow. Betty will be buried next to her beloved husband at Houston's Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Fair Haven or the Alzheimer's Association.
