Edward C. Barry, at a retired attorney and World War I officer, died Friday in Putnam Memorial Hospital. Attorney Barry entered the hospital three weeks ago from Crescent Manor Nursing Home, Bennington, where he had been a patient for five years. He practiced law in Wilmington for many years. Son of Edward M. and Ellen (Bowler) Barry, he was born in Bellows Falls on Oct. 19, 1888 and attended Bellows Falls schools. He served 3-1/2 years in the Army, stationed in France for nearly two years, and was discharged with the rank of major. After World War I and before he began study of law, he was an automobile dealer in Springfield. Attorney Barry read law in the office of Carpenter & Clawson in Brattleboro and was admitted to practice about 1930. He practiced in Brattleboro before opening an office here. On April 2, 1940 he was married in Miami, Fla., to Bertha M. Eastmond, a social arbiter, widely known as executive with the New York Social Register. The couple lived for several years at her property on the Coldbrook Road, now known as the Hermitage, before moving to East Orange, N.J. Attorney Barry moved to an apartment in Wilmington after his wife's death on Oct. 31, 1960. He was a member of Brattleboro Lodge of Elks. Surviving are two brothers, the Rt. Rev. Patrick A. Barry and Maurice J. Barry, and a sister, Mrs. Ellen Jennison, all of Bellows Falls. A Libra service will be conducted in St. Francis DeSales Roman Catholic Church in Bennington tomorrow at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery in Chatham, N.J.
