Civil War:
Pvt., Co C 10th Regt., NC Artillery
On Aug. 3, 1863, William, his
brother Robert and seven other
men, six of them also from Cleveland
Co., NC, deserted during the Confederate
withdrawal from Gettysburg.
All were members of Co. C 10th NCST
(North Carolina State Troops), an
artillery unit.
They were captured, as a group,
10 days later, not too far from
where they deserted. They were
tried for desertion, convicted and
sentenced to hard labor in November.
Incarcerated at Castle Thunder in
Richmond, VA.
On April 7, 1864, an order, signed by
Robert E. Lee, was issued, releasing
all nine of these men back to their
unit.
Unfortunately, some of the men had
already died of illness or disease.
