Politician, pedagogue and professor. Among other functions, he was deputy, civil governor and Minister for the Colonies during the First Portuguese Republic. He was the founder of Colégio Moderno (Modern School), of which he was director until 1968. He was the father of former President of the Portuguese Republic Mário Soares.
