At age 22, on June 15, 1917, Ralph registered for Military duty serving his Country in WWI.

A Doctor, In-House. From 1908-28, the location of KU's student hospital, such as it was, changed five times. Due to lack of funding and personnel, the hospital struggled to cope with serious outbreaks of disease. A long stride towards high-quality medical care came in 1928 when the University dispensed with the employ of part-time physicians and hired Dr. Ralph I. Canuteson as full-time director of Hospital and Health. Initially, he and his staff operated in humble accommodations in a converted private home at 1406 Tennessee Street. In 1932, Canuteson became the first director of Watkins Memorial Hospital.

Canuteson was the first full-time director of Student Health Services from 1928 to 1965. He died in 1970 (of a heart attack). His widow, Elsie P. Canuteson, bequeathed funding for lectures on public health education and public health medicine on the Lawrence campus in her husband's honor.

Information taken from KU's website. Mrs. Canuteson was my friend.

Grace D. - b. 1897 - (Elsie (Parker) Canuteson's was Grace's childhood best friend. Playing with Grace is how Elsie met her husband Ralph.
