4343 Private C Morrill (or Morrell), 1st Battalion the (King's) Liverpool Regiment. The Battalion was in Ladysmith when war was declared. They fought at the battle of Rietfontein on 24 Oct 1899 and then withdrew into Ladysmith where they were throughout the siege. During the siege the Liverpools were located on the north side of the town, and were not in the terrible fighting when the attack was made upon the southern defences on 6 Jan 1900. The battalion and other troops were emaciated after the siege and were given time to recuperate. They were part of the advance north from Ladysmith into the Transvaal in the 8th Brigade under General Howard. They were at the Battle of Bergendal on 27 Aug 1900, then moved into Lydenburg before the battalion became the garrison in Helvetia, captured by the Boers on 29 Dec 1900, with 11 men killed, 24 wounded and the rest of the 250 strong garrison captured. During the remainder of the war the battalion was in the Eastern Transvaal. Private Morrill was killed in action at Brugspruit, on the west side of Witbank, Transvaal. He is also commemorated on the (King's) Liverpool Regiment Boer War memorial in St John's Gardens, behind St Georges Hall, William Brown Street, City Centre, Liverpool, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/121227).

Surname recorded as Morrell on the cemetery memorial. Recorded as Morrill on the South African Field Force Casualty Roll and on In Memoriam by S Watt.
